I just had an inspiring and energizing lunch with the daughter of the owners of our local coffee shop, Torrey Strohmeier. Torrie is energetic, young and mobilized. She explained that, as a thirty-something single female passionate about politics and good causes, she realized that her non-profit jobs often didn't overlap with her friends or professional associates. So she set out to make a difference.
In her research, she found that:
A recent study conducted by Women’s Voices, Women Vote, found:• 22 Million unmarried women who were eligible to vote did not cast ballots in the election in 2000.
• If unmarried women voted at the same rate as married women, over six million more voters would have gone to the polls in 2000.
• 16 million unmarried women were not registered to vote in 2000.
• 56% of all women not registered to vote are unmarried.
• 46% of all voting-age women are unmarried.According to the study, these women do want the government to be responsive to issues of importance to them such as job security, health care, and education. However, they doubt the authenticity of today’s politicians and whether or not they will be agents of positive change.
Policy is being set and politicians are being elected without the input of this critical segment of the population. This is a trend that must be reversed.
So, she did something about it!
she19 is her very passionately created organization to get the word out in a chic and unique (and fun and simple!) way ... through the purchase and then subsequent wearing of a t-shirt.
2004 is an important year -- the 2000 election proved beyond a doubt that every last vote cast makes a difference. What better way to ensure that the next election is truly the voice of all of the people!
